New Pension Scheme Update: Central or state Govt employees have demanded to restart the long running old pension program. Currently, employees working in five states are getting the benefits of the old pension system. Meanwhile, there is news. That by the end of this year the Central Govt may make major changes in the National Pension Scheme (NPS).
This amendment in NPS will ensure that employees will be able to get 40 to 45 percent of their salary as pension after retirement. A high level panel has agreed in this regard. According to recent reports, two officials associated with the matter said that the govt is considering a new proposal. The govt has not yet given any reaction on this.
However, in view of the Lok Sabha elections, the govt may take a decision on this soon. The old pension system is completely dominant at this time. Because in some states the Old Age Pension Scheme (OPS) is applicable.

Under the old pension scheme restored in these states, govt employees get 50 percent of their interim salary as pension. The old pension scheme has been restarted in Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. Various economists expressed concern that it could turn state govts into dictators. SBI Chief Economic Advisor Soumya Kant Ghosh said that the old pension scheme is not valid. Re-implementation of the old pension system may increase the debt burden on the states.
