Schools & Banks Closed Due To Rain & Flood in Tamil Nadu, 800 Passengers Stranded at Railway Station
Tamil Nadu Rain: It has started raining heavily in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu since Sunday. Because a cyclone has arisen near Cape Comarin in the Indian Ocean. This has caused floods in many parts of the state (Tamil Nadu flood). Flood has stranded 800 railway passengers in Srivaikuntam in Thoothukudi district of Tamil Nadu. Passengers of the Chennai-bound express train from the temple town of Tiruchendur are stranded since yesterday in Srivaikuntam, the area most affected by the floods. Till now Thoothukudi has received more than 525 mm of rain.
Heavy rains and floods have downed the railway line in Srivaikuntam. This resulted in hanging iron tracks attached to the cement slab. An official said that all efforts are underway to rescue the stranded passengers. And NDRF officers have taken charge. On December 17, Chennai Egmore Express (train number 20606) left Tiruchendur at 8:25 pm. Flood and heavy rain stopped the train at Srivaikuntam railway station, about 32 km from Tiruchendur.
He said that a total of 800 passengers are stranded. Of which about 500 are staying at Srivaikuntam Railway Station and about 300 are staying in nearby schools. The tracks are completely submerged in floods. Hence Southern Railway suspended rail traffic between Srivaikuntam and Sedunganallur on Tirunelveli-Tiruchendur section.

The Meteorological Department said that there is a possibility of heavy rain in the next 24 to 48 hours. Southern Railway has canceled 15 trains due to rain and floods. And routes of many vehicles have been changed. The cyclone has also affected flights. Today, schools, colleges and banks are closed in the southern districts. The situation has become worst in Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Tenkasi and Kanyakumari. So far, more than 7500 people have been rescued from floods in these districts.

In view of the flood situation in the southern districts, the state govt has deployed more than 250 soldiers of the State Disaster Relief Force and National Disaster Relief Force. On Monday, the India Meteorological Department said that 39 areas of southern Tamil Nadu have received heavy rains. IMMD said in a bulletin that most places in southern Tamil Nadu received light to moderate rainfall, while Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi and Kanyakumari districts received heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. On December 19, one or two heavy spells of rain are expected over Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Tenkasi districts.
