The survey of the railway line was done in 1956. MP Kalika Singh had started the survey to build a railway track till Varanasi. But it was not completed. Industries in Azamgarh and surrounding areas have lags behind due to lack of railways. These include jute of Atraulia, Rani Ki Sarai, black pottery of Nizamabad and silk industry of Mubarakpur.
Railway track will cross 500 villages
The govt said that the railway track from Varanasi-Lalganj to Azamgarh will pass through about 500 villages. The govt has proposed Rs 4 crore 89 lakh 80 thousand for the final location survey (195.91 km) of the new railway line between Varanasi and Gorakhpur via Lalganj and Ajamgarh. Rs 1 crore will be spent in the 2022–2022 financial year. Rs 1 crore 27 lakh will be spent in the 2022–2023 financial year.

Many industries closed due to lack of railway lines.
Due to lack of rail service, people of Lalganj and surrounding areas have to go to Varanasi or Azamgarh to reach other metros. Many companies were closed due to this. The govt has raised this issue several times in Parliament. And has sought a report while releasing the budget for the final location survey.
