It influences the weather of the northern and north-western parts of the Indian subcontinent. This system brings cold and moist winds, which cause torrential rain and snowfall in the plains and mountains of India. Western Disturbance Active 17 January
A low pressure area develops due to a western disturbance. The system makes landfall in India through the predominant westerly winds. It brings moisture from the Mediterranean Sea, the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. When the cold winds hit the Himalayan region, there is heavy rain and snowfall.
Due to the western disturbance, Delhi and North India receive heavy rainfall during the winter season. The rain is accompanied by strong wind which makes it colder. If the western disturbance is active in the summer, it brings down the heat by bringing gusty rain or storm. Thunderstorms reduce pollution levels in Delhi as it clears dust and pollutant particles in the atmosphere.
Light rains in winter prove to be beneficial for wheat and rabi crops, but hailstorms with torrential rains cause damage to crops. In winter, when dark clouds suddenly appear in the sky, moisture increases in the air and hail begins to fall with torrential rains, it is considered to be a sign of western disturbance.
