Auto Update: KTM 490 Twin-Cylinder Range to be Manufactured at Chakan Plant; Launch Expected by Late 2027.
The Bajaj-KTM partnership is poised to make an entry soon with a new motorcycle. Notably, the duo is developing a new sub-500cc twin-cylinder platform specifically for the Indian market; subsequently, bikes based on this new platform are expected to be introduced globally by the end of 2027.
This upcoming sub-500cc range will likely be launched under the '490' moniker. It is expected to include models such as the 490 Duke and 490 Adventure. The global debut of the new KTM 490 range is highly anticipated at EICMA 2027, with the official launch expected to follow a few months later.
The new 490 range will represent the third generation of KTM's small-capacity engine platform and is being developed entirely in India by Bajaj Auto. This new twin-cylinder engine will also comply with Europe's A2 license regulations, meaning its power output will remain below 48 bhp (35 kW).
Production of the KTM 490 range will take place at Bajaj's Chakan plant in Pune, underscoring Bajaj's growing role in KTM's global product development efforts. This new engine platform will debut with the 490 Duke, followed by the launch of the 490 Adventure. Models such as the RC 490 and Husqvarna 501 may also be introduced, though their release will depend on market demand.
Speculation suggests that this new 490 range will globally replace the existing 390 line-up, as there is little rationale for maintaining two distinct engine capacities—offering nearly identical power outputs—within the same market segment. However, KTM may choose to retain the 350cc-powered 390 range in India as a more affordable option, while positioning the 490 range as a more premium, refined, and high-performance upgrade.
Following its launch, the KTM 490 range will compete with bikes such as the BMW F 450 GS, Aprilia Tuono 457, Aprilia RS 457, Honda NX500, and Kawasaki Ninja 500.
