Johannesburg. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrived to attend the BRICS Summit, held a bilateral meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. The meeting resolved to strengthen trade, defense and investment ties between India and South Africa. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted after the meeting that he had an excellent meeting with President Cyril Ramaphosa. Several issues were discussed in the meeting aimed at deepening India-South Africa relations. Trade, defense and investment relations figured prominently in these discussions. Both countries will continue to work together to strengthen the voice of the Global South. The South African President also highlighted the opportunities that exist to contribute to Africa's growth story.

Ramaphosa said this could be achieved through greater cooperation in areas such as infrastructure, agriculture, manufacturing, clean energy and the digital economy. Earlier, the expansion of BRICS was discussed during the leaders' retreat of the leaders of BRICS countries, which has yielded important results. India played a leading role in building consensus on membership criteria and selection of new members. India's effort is to include strategic partners as new members of BRICS.
