Defending champions Sri Lanka started their Asia Cup campaign with a win. In their first match of Group-B, they defeated Bangladesh by five wickets. Batting first in the match played at Pallekele International Stadium, Bangladesh team was all out for 164 runs in 42.4 overs. Nazmul Shanto played an inning of 89 runs. In reply, Sri Lanka achieved the target by losing five wickets in 39 overs. Sadeera Samarawickrama scored 54 runs and Charith Aslanka scored an unbeaten 62 runs.

After winning the toss, the Bangladeshi team came out to bat first and lost three wickets for 36 runs. Najmul Hussain Shanto scored more than half the runs for him. Najmul played an inning of 89 runs off 122 balls. He missed out on scoring a century. Apart from Najmul, no batsman could stay at the crease. Tauhid Hriday scored 20, Mohammad Naeem scored 16 and Mushfiqur Rahim scored 13 runs. Apart from these four, no batsman could touch the figure of Dahai. Tanjid Hasan zero, Captain Shakib Al Hasan five runs, Mehdi Hasan Miraj five runs, Mehdi Hasan six runs, Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur were out for zero. In reply, Sri Lanka also had a poor start. The team had lost three wickets for 43 runs. Pathum Nissanka was dismissed for 14 runs, Dimuth Karunaratne one run and Kusal Mendis five runs. After this, Sadeera Samarawickrama and Charith Aslanka shared a 78-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Sadira scored the third half-century of his ODI career.
