'Khufiya' movie review

Writer-director Vishal Bhardwaj is a great storyteller. His films are not only entertaining. Rather, his style on screen is sharp. This time his film is based on Amar Bhushan's novel 'Escape to Nowhere' published in 2012. The plot of this fictional story is from the early 2000s. Immediately after the Kargil war. It has all the ingredients required for a spy thriller. The film starts off on an interesting note about Krishna Mehra aka KM (Tabu). He is on a mission to capture a traitorous agent, Ravi (Ali Fazal). Who is believed to be responsible for the death of a RAW agent in Dhaka, Bangladesh. ,

The novel from which this story has been taken by Vishal Bhardwaj. It is written by the former head of the counter espionage unit of RAW (Research and Analysis Wing). Therefore, the technical aspects of espionage have also been taken full care of in the screenplay of the film. This is the reason why on screen the agency people engage in actions like decoding codes, accessing secret information, bugging offices and double crossing agents. So it all feels very authentic.

The audience has always been interested in spies on screen. Here too Vishal Bhardwaj has included many such steely henchmen. Which will surprise you. The team which is led by KM or his boss Jeev (Ashish Vidyarthi). She is as humane as she is hard-hearted. At one place in the film it is called Jeeva. 'The brain beats in our body, not the heart.'

Apart from the thrill of the trap laid to catch the criminal, there are twists in the story. They add excitement. Along with this, the film also tells what secrets there can be in the personal lives of spies. For 2 hours and 37 minutes, the film keeps moving at its own pace without any distractions. However, at some places in the second half it also loses its grip.

The music of 'Khufiya' is also appealing. Vishal Bhardwaj has created magic again with poet and lyricist Gulzar Sahab. Be it 'Mat Aana' sung by Rekha Bhardwaj, or 'Man Na Rangav' sung by Rahul Ram. These songs stay with you both during and after the film.

In the film, Tabu has done an excellent job as a sharp detective and a lover as well as a woman torn between job and family. She fits amazingly into every style. Atul Kulkarni's role as her ex-husband is small but powerful. Ali Fazal is in his top form. As a traitor, he has done a great job of living this character. Vamika Gabbi shines in the role of a loving and courageous wife and mother. Bangladeshi actress Ajmeri Haq Badhon has also left a mark in her younger role.

Why watch - If you want to see a fictional version of a novel inspired by true events, a thrilling detective story and great acting with fun turn-twists, then 'Khufiya' is for you.
