Rice Price: Rice Rates Will Be Reduced, Central Govt issued a Big Order

 

Rice Price: The central govt has asked the Rice Industry Association to immediately reduce the retail price of rice. Sanjeev Chopra, Secretary, Department of Food and Public Distribution, reviewed the domestic prices of non-Basmati rice. The following guidelines are provided in it.

Discussion on increase in rice prices

In the meeting, Chopra demanded the industry to take measures to bring the prices in the domestic market to a reasonable level. PIB said that industry associations have been advised. That they should take up this issue with their members and reduce the retail price of rice with immediate effect. Why are the prices of non-Basmati rice increasing in the domestic market despite adequate stocks with the Food Corporation of India (FCI), ban on export of rice and good Kharif crop?

As per govt instructions, we have stock of good quality rice. It is also sold to traders and processors at Rs 29 per kg under the Open Market Sales Scheme (OMSS). But in the retail market it is sold at Rs 43 to 50 per kg.

Rice Export Ban: Export banned in July

The Modi govt had imposed a ban on the export of non-Basmati rice in July 2023, in order to secure the supply of rice and reduce prices. Along with this, export expenditure also increased. The govt raised the minimum export price of rice to $950 per tonne in October, which was another important decision.

Despite all these efforts, the continuous increase in rice prices is a cause for concern. The govt warned in the meeting that if profiteering took place, strict action would be taken.
