FISU World University Games 2023: India Won Record 26 Medals, Shooters Showed Best Performance
FISU World University Games 2023: India finished seventh in the FISU World University Games 2023 with an ever-best 26 medals – 11 gold, five silver and 10 bronze. Prime Minister Modi tweeted congratulations to the players.
The 31st edition of the World University Games was held in Chengdu, People's Republic of China from 28 July to 8 August. In this, China secured the pole position with 103 gold medals.

PM Modi tweeted congratulations
The Prime Minister tweeted and congratulated the players for this record win.
PM Modi said, “A sporting performance that will make every Indian proud. At the 31st World University Games, Indian athletes return with a record-breaking tally of 26 medals! Our best ever performance, it includes 11 Gold, 5 Silver and 10 Bronze”.
"Salute to our incredible athletes who have brought glory to the nation and inspired budding sportspersons."
He said, “It is a matter of particular happiness. India has won a total of 18 medals in the World University Games since its inception in 1959. Thus, this year's exemplary result of 26 medals is indeed remarkable."

The previous best performance came in 2015
India's previous best performance at the World University Games came in Gwangju 2015, where Indian athletes won five medals - one gold, one silver and three bronze.
In the 2019 edition in Naples, India won four medals - one gold, one silver and two bronze. India has been a part of the World University Games since the inaugural edition in 1959 in Turin.

Shooting team won maximum 14 medals
Around 230 Indian athletes participated in the FISU World University Games 2023. Of the 26 medals won by India in Chengdu, 14 medals – eight gold, four silver and two bronze – were won by the Indian shooting contingent.
Rifle shooter Aishwarya Pratap Singh Tomar, a Tokyo Olympian, was the most successful Indian athlete at the World University Games with four medals.
Aishwarya Pratap Singh Tomar won gold medals in Men's 10m Air Rifle and 50m Rifle 3 Positions and was part of the gold medal winning Men's 10m Air Rifle team. He also won bronze with the men's 50m rifle 3 positions team.
Youth Olympic Games champions Manu Bhaker and Sift Kaur Samra also won multiple gold medals. Manu Bhaker won gold medals in the women's 10m air pistol individual and team events. Sift Kaur Samra reflected Manu's success in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions.

Archers won seven medals including three gold
Indian archers contributed seven medals including three gold. Avneet Kaur and Sangampreet Singh Bisla won individual gold medals in the women's and men's compound event respectively. Aman Saini and Pragati teamed up to win gold in the mixed compound team event.
India won four bronze medals in athletics
India won four bronze medals in athletics. Jyoti Yaraji created a new national record by winning bronze medal in women's 100m hurdles. Amlan Borgohain (men's 200m) and Bhavani Yadav (women's long jump) also won bronze medals.
Priyanka got bronze in 20 km race walk
Priyanka Goswami, a silver medalist in the 10,000m walk at the Commonwealth Games and the Asian Athletics Championships, led the Indian women's 20km race walk team to a bronze medal.
yamini won bronze in judo
Competing in the women's 57kg, Yamini Maurya won India's only bronze medal in judo. This was India's first Judo medal at the World University Games.

China won maximum 178 medals while hosting
Hosts China topped the FISU World University Games medal tally with 178 medals, including 103 gold. Japan finished second with 21 gold medals out of 93. Republic of Korea finished third with 17 gold medals out of a total of 58.
The next edition of the World University Games is scheduled to take place in Germany in 2025.
