Why is it Special To Find Sulfur on The Moon? ISRO Will Solve The Mystery, Scientists Came Up With These 2 Theories

Yuva Patrkaar : Pragyan Rover has already confirmed the presence of many elements including sulfur and oxygen on the Moon. But ISRO has confirmed on Thursday. That another instrument of Pragyan Rover has found sulfur in the region (south pole of the Moon) through another technique. There are two techniques that have confirmed sulfur in the Moon's south pole region. On August 23, Chandrayaan 3 successfully landed on the south pole of the Moon. Now scientists must explain the source of sulfur on the Moon.

Sulfur is usually produced by volcanic activities. But the scientific fraternity has not yet thrown any light on confirming the presence of sulfur on the Moon. The previous technology with sulfur discovered was the laser-induced breakdown spectroscope onboard the Pragyaan rover. Now the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectroscope (APXS) has detected sulfur and some other minor elements.

ISRO tweeted in its latest update on Chandrayaan 3 that the discovery of CH-3 forces scientists to develop new explanations for the source of sulfur (S) in the region. Internal, volcanic, meteoric.

Confirmation of sulfur on the Moon, instruments installed on the rover provided proof

Sulfur was not expected on the lunar surface, but two of the rover's instruments confirmed its presence. Aluminum, silicon, calcium, iron were expected and they were also found. ISRO said that Chandrayaan-3 has landed in the southern polar region. What are the moon's soil and rocks made of? How is it different from other highland areas? These are the questions that the Chandrayaan-3 rover is trying to answer with its scientific instruments. Indications are given by the presence of sulphur. That there may be water ice on the surface of the Moon. Or there could be a recent volcanic eruption. Due to which sulfur is coming out.

How does APXS work?

Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) is the latest technology. Which has confirmed the presence of sulfur on the Moon. According to ISRO, the APXS instrument is best suited for in-situ analysis of the elemental composition of soils and rocks on the surface of planets with thin atmospheres such as the Moon. It contains radioactive sources. Which emit alpha particles and X-rays at the surface sample. The atoms present in the sample in turn emit characteristic X-ray lines corresponding to the elements present. By measuring the energy and intensity of these specific X-rays, researchers can determine the elements present and their abundance.
