Dr. Renu Raj completed her early studies from St. Teresa's Higher Secondary School in Kottayam, Kerala. After completing his schooling, he pursued medical studies at the Government Medical College, Kottayam itself. In the year 2013, along with medical practice, he also started preparing for UPSC exam.

In 2014, Dr. Renu Raj appeared in the Civil Services Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). He secured second rank in his very first attempt. Dr. Renu Raj comes from one such family. Where his father is a retired government employee. His mother is a housewife. And both his sisters and their husbands are doctors. His childhood dream of becoming an IAS officer finally came true.

When Dr. Renu Raj started her UPSC preparation, she was working as a surgeon. In several interviews, he spoke about his desire to make a wider impact on society. Where becoming a doctor would give him a chance to help 50 or 100 patients, becoming a civil servant would benefit thousands. Inspired by this feeling, he decided to give UPSC exam.

After achieving success, Dr. Renu Raj shares tips for the aspirants. He revealed that since 2013, he devoted 3-6 hours daily for UPSC exam preparation while continuing his medical practice. He followed this schedule for six to seven months. Later, he decided to focus fully on his preparation. After the main examination, he resumed his medical practice. However, his determination remained unaffected.

In April 2022, Dr. Renu Raj married IAS officer Sriram Venkataraman, who is MD in Kerala Medical Services Corporation. The couple celebrated their wedding in a simple way and completed all the rituals in the presence of their near and dear ones. Noteworthy. That Sriram Venkitaraman also secured second rank in UPSC exam in 2012.
